Clipart is a term that is used to describe artwork such as an image, graphic, picture, photo, or illustration that is inserted into a document such as a publication, print, desktop publishing, scrapbooking, advertising, or any other venture that uses images.
Clip art can include illustrations as well as visual elements such as lines, bullets, and text separators.
Historically clipart was a term that was used by people in the publishing business when they would literally clip, or cut, printed images and paste them into a layout to use in other projects. During this time most images were generic and were created in black and white. In the 1990s when personal computer usage and desktop publishing had grown significantly, the demand for computer graphics, or clipart, grew as well. Clipart could be purchased on computer disks to use over and over. Today, clip art comes on CD-ROM and can also be downloaded from the internet. Some clipart is public domain so that there are no copyright restrictions in its use, while other clipart rights must be purchased.
Animated clip art is an image, linebar, bullet, button or webpage background that moves. Animated clipart is designed specifically for use on web pages or other computer programs where the movement can be seen. Animated clipart images can be downloaded in the same way that traditional clip art is downloaded.
